If you are considering chiropractic care after a car accident, ask about treatment suitability and payment separately. Having an accident does not guarantee that insurance will pay every bill.
Check Whether You Have PIP
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is optional auto coverage in Washington. Insurers must offer it, and a policyholder who declines it must do so in writing. Check your declarations page and speak with your insurer rather than assume you have coverage.
PIP can apply regardless of fault, but eligibility, exclusions, benefit limits, and claim requirements still matter. The Washington Office of the Insurance Commissioner explains that medical services must be reasonable, necessary, related to the accident, and incurred within the applicable time limit.
Questions to Ask Before an Appointment
Ask your insurer whether the claim is open, what benefits remain, what documentation is needed, and whether the proposed services qualify. Ask the clinic how billing is handled and what you may owe if coverage is limited, exhausted, or denied.
Do not assume that direct billing means there will be no personal payment responsibility. A provider cannot guarantee an insurer’s coverage decision, claim settlement, or future premium.
What to Bring When You Contact Us
Have your insurer name, claim number, and adjuster contact information available when discussing billing. Ask about any referral or authorization requirements and request clarification of fees before treatment.
Clinical recommendations should be based on your examination and needs. An insurance benefit does not establish that a particular treatment is appropriate.
